Officers, staff members, employees, nurses, health care givers spared no effort in attending the Holiday Celebrations held at the grand ballroom of Astoria Manor last Saturday, December 19, 2009 in spite of the blizzard that spread a carpet more than 12 inches of snow.

The traditional Christmas Party held annually also marked the 21st anniversary of the establishment of United Staffing Registry, Inc., which is likewise celebrated by handing out plaques of recognition and appreciation to nurses, and other health care givers recognizing them as cream of the crop, top-performers, and dedicated professionals. The plaques were given together with round trip plane tickets for two to Florida/Las Vegas and/or cash.

Raffle tickets giving away 32/19 inches televisions sets, I-pod and I-pod-dock including two (2) Kuwaiti roundtrip airline tickets to London held the guest dancing up to closing time.

Mr. Benjamin H. Santos, RN-BS/HCM delivered an inspiring year-end message on how the company withstood the trials and tribulations of the impact of the economic meltdown and the financial strait the world finds itself in. That we have weathered the storm and are still “standing tall” was very much applauded. Mr. Santos took advantage of the occasion to thank the officers, staff, employees, members of their families for their loyalty, trustworthiness, dedication to duty and professionalism.

Surprisingly, with the blizzard at its peak outside, the celebration was very well attended. The dance floor was always fully occupied with all kinds of dancers, “line dance” flock, “ball room” dancers, “wannabe” dancers, “two-left-footed” dancers and the “who cares” terpsichoreans. Smiles and laughter everywhere spelled a very “jolly” occasion, a “time to remember.”

The “Holiday Celebration” was an occasion for all people in all walks of life and whatever the occasion, be it “Hanukkah,” “Kwanzaa” or “Christmas.” to observe and get together in the spirit of friendship and brotherhood.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HEALTHY/PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!!!

United Staffing Registry Inc., d/b/a United Home Care celebrated the 20th anniversary of its founding in a Christmas Party before a capacity crowd comprising of distinguished guests, staff members, employees, nurses, health care givers, and their families. The affair was held at the pomp Astoria World Manor before a capacity crowd of more than 300 where
food for the gods and drinks for the connoisseurs were all for the taking.

United Home Care took advantage of the occasion to recognize and cite 25 nurses/healthcare givers by presenting them “Plaques of Appreciation & Recognition,” airline tickets to the Philippines/Florida/Las Vegas and cash. It was also an occasion to recognize and introduce the new arrivals/comers and present them their “gifts.” Dancing in all styles reached its heights and grand prizes were raffled in-between.

The highlight of the event was the message delivered by the President & CEO Benjamin H. Santos, RN-BS/HCM, where he pointed out the height of a world financial meltdown, recession, the progressively rising unemployment compounded by 1.5 million layoffs with no end in sight. He went further to state that in November 2008 alone, 533,000 were laid off.

The president was cheered and applauded when he stated, “Yet, we find ourselves here in the Grand Ballroom of Astoria World Manor, enjoying, celebrating, weathering the storm, standing tall and strong. We have no lay-offs or down-sizing. As a matter of fact we are continuously hiring.”

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO YOU ALL. MALIGAYANG PASKO SA INYONG LAHAT.

The presence of the Honorable Ambassador Hilario G. Davide, Jr., formerly Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines and presently the Permanent Representative to the Philippine Mission to the United Nations at the Nursing Excellence Award 2008 as guest speaker added greater honor and glory to the already nationally acclaimed festivities otherwise known as “Filipino
Nursing Day!.”

Adding professionalism and that “woman’s touch” was the very well applauded inspirational speech delivered by Deputy Consul General Melita Sta. Maria Tomeczek and the reading of the message of the Hon. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg by UHC Senior Vice-President Zenaida E. Santos, MD.

The search was open to all Filipino-American nurses and undertaken by mail, e-mail, fax and press. Most welcome were nominations from Directors of Nursing/Administrators and Chief Executive Officers of hospitals and health care facilities. The five (5) outstanding Registered Professional Nurses were chosen for having shown exemplary dedication, compassion and professionalism, and beyond that is symbolic, that is, that they received the awards for and in behalf of the more than 2.7 million nurses all over the country for “making a difference on the lives that they touch everyday.”

Benjamin H. Santos, RN-BS/HCM tackled the situation squarely when in his Welcome Address, he stated that the occasion is “in honor of the tireless efforts of the Registered Professional Nurses nationwide, recognizing the invaluable services they provide, that is, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year.” It is reason enough to “pay tribute to these nurses who make the ultimate sacrifice on a daily basis to provide expert care during times of disaster and distress.”

Ceremonies were held at the Philippine Consulate Offices, Kalayaan Hall, 556 5th Avenue, NY 10036 at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, May 10, 2008. Capital One Bank was one of the sponsors of the festivities.

The Philippine Independence Day Parade is a celebration for the Filipino American community in the Northeast United States, home to more than half a million Filipinos. Its main purpose is to create awareness of Philippine culture and to raise funds for charity projects in the USA and the Philippines.
Philippine Independence, as a celebration in America, is largely an invention of the last decade–rather than having distinct cultural significance, the event is instead manufactured as a cultural awareness campaign.

Earlier generations of Filipino immigrants did not celebrate Philippine Independence in significant ways. Philippine Independence is widely celebrated among Filipinos in the United States and is now a major event for many Filipino Americans to rekindle their roots and heritage. The largest among Philippine Independence celebrations in the United States takes place in New York City every first Sunday of June.

The 2008 Philippine Independence Day Parade in New York City took place on June 1, 2008 at Madison Avenue, following the tradition of the celebration being on the first Sunday of June.

Together with the Filipino American community, the Philippine Consulate General in New York created the Philippine Independence Day Committee (PIDC) to commemorate the birth of Philippine Independence.

Established in 1990 during Consul General Hermenegildo Garcia’s term, PIDC is an ad hoc committee with a life cycle of one year. All consuls general would later become honorary overall chairperson. The position of overall chairperson is elected every year. The winner in the election will then appoint the rest of her/his executive committee.

At first, the theme of each year’s celebration is handed down from the government in Manila. Later on, the overall chairperson chooses the theme for her/his term. The coat of arms of the Republic of the Philippines is the centerpiece of the PIDC logo and PIDC’s official address is that of the Philippine Consulate in New York. Checks payable to PIDC are mailed to and received by the Philippine Consulate and handed over to PIDC. All PIDC meetings, with rare exceptions, are conducted at the Consulate.

The Philippine Independence Day celebration in Northeast U.S.A. includes not only New York but also the twelve states under the jurisdiction of the Philippine Consulate General in New York, namely, Connecticut, Delaware, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont. Depending on the theme each year, the overall chairperson may expand and invite other areas to participate in PIDC’s many activities.

Traditionally held along Manhattan’s Madison Avenue from 23rd to 40th Streets, the culmination of the preparation, the Grand Parade, Street Fair and Cultural Show, held on the first Sunday in June each year is the biggest celebration of Philippine Independence outside the Philippines. The festivities include the Diwa ng Kalayaan (Spirit of Freedom, a beauty and talent contest), Youth Festival, Independence Ball, Consul General Night, Grand Marshal Night, other fund raising activities, special cultural presentations and other events that may be initiated by the overall chairperson.

The Philippine Consulate extends its support and guidance to the PIDC from inception to culmination of the annual event. It begins with the sending of invitations to community leaders to a general meeting, election of overall chairperson, and in the planning and execution of activities up to Appreciation Night where the Consul General awards certificates of appreciation to PIDC officers and members.

Since 1993, there were calls for incorporation of PIDC. On September 8, 2001, with the election of the overall chairperson, the members of the Filipino American community were also given the chance to cast their vote on the incorporation of PIDC. Results showed that majority of Filipino Americans are in favor of incorporating PIDC. With paperwork and processing, an incorporated PIDC will take effect in 2003. Hence, 2003 was PIDC’s last year under the auspices of the Consulate General of the Philippines, New York.

The Philippine Independence Day Parade, like any major New York City parades, has a set schedule for its annual celebration. Its usual slot is the first Sunday of June. Since its inception in 1993, the parade has steadily garnered attention not only from the Filipino American community, also from the general population of the New York metropolitan area.

The Philippine Independence Day Celebration, Inc. has been criticized for failing to invite prominent leaders and figures to join the annual event. Also, the committee has been continuously called on to allow younger Filipinos and Filipino Americans to collaborate in organizing the Philippine Independence Day Parade as opposed to the usual older generation of Filipinos, who are members of the current committee.

The annual parade also experiences protests from several Philippine civic groups.

The value of hard work, community service and the pursuit of humanitarian causes found himself totally engrossed on medical missions in the remotest of towns and barrios of the Philippines. Noteworthy of the several missions launched for charitable and humanitarian causes were the medical missions dubbed as “Mission Eyesight” in Central Luzon, or “Eyesight Saving Mission” in Eastern
Visayas and “Mission Cataract,” where a whole town of the Province of Nueva Ecija was involved in the registration and screening of the indigent patients at the local provincial hospital.

Dr. Benjie Santos was on top of the Free Cataract Operations which included but not limited to transportation of the farmers/patients, medicines, medical supplies, hospital and operating room, honorarium, ophthalmologists, intraocular lenses and continued follow-up of patients all for FREE. It was not a surprise to find Dr. Benjie Santos performing the cataract operation himself.. His first involvement with United Staffing Registry, Inc., started in the Philippines with simply setting dates and appointments with applicant nurses and interviewing them for employment as a nurse or health care giver in the United States. On a larger scale, he would conduct seminars covering all the phases of employment starting with local laws, U.S. Immigration Laws, qualifying examinations prescribed by the Board of Nursing of the United States, including the entire climate of a sudden change of
environment and atmosphere.

His involvement took a more serious stand when he found himself in all phases of the operation, not only of United Staffing Registry, Inc., but also with United Home Care, Inc., United Travel World Agency , Inc., United Home Care Foundation of Queens (the charitable arm of United Home Care), United Medical Clinics, the Aces of Queens (Jackson Heights) Lions Club and the management of the real estate enterprises, not to mention other businesses now on the drawing board.

How he can still find time to coach the Arizona Diamondbacks, a group of 7 to 8 year old kids who was 2nd Place at the recently concluded Jamaica Estates Holliswood Little League with plans to form in 2008 another team of 5 to 6 year old little leaguers makes one wonder where he gets all that energy.
